Here Comes The Week

Sometimes I wish the weekend wouldn’t end. Maybe it’s because Christa is gone until 10:15PM Mon-Wed, or maybe its because I know I have a ton of projects due next week at work. Either or, I vote to have a three day weekend every week. I feel I would be much more productive after three days of rest and relaxation. I found 7 Geocaches yesterday, which is an all time high for me. After all is said, I could still use another weekend day. Happy Monday everyone!

Excuse Me Sir, There Is a Dog In Your Bed

Our pug Junior is just about a year and a half now, and he has been crate trained for his whole life. Christa has been bringing it up that she thinks it is time for him to sleep in our bed at night. I am beginning to think the same thing, especially when I see Junior jump up into the bed and lay down when I am using the computer, etc.. I am considering buying a liner for my mattress just to be safe, you never know if he will want to claim the bed as new territory. Does anyone have experience making this transition? Have any funny stories about your dog relating to your bed (I know what your thinking sicko! :) )? I really need to know what I am getting myself into before I take this leap.

See more pictures of Junior HERE, the third section is devoted to him.

New Geocache in Cohoes

I just hid a new Geocache in Cohoes, NY. The name of the cache is “Easter in Cohoes”, because I hid it today (Easter). I think of it as my own little Easter egg hunt! The coordinates are: N 42° 46.452 W 073° 43.358. It is a small 35mm film canister and it is hidden near a local school. Here is a link (reguires login) to the cache details page. I walk my dog by this area almost everyday and I have been meaning to hide a cache here for some time now. It is a good geographic location, because about half way in between two other caches in the area. Don’t know what Geocaching is? Goto Geocaching.com and read up on it. I promise, you will be hooked after you find your first cache! Happy Easter!

EDIT: So it turns out that I placed the cache on school property, and this is a big no-no in geocaching. I will be relocating it, and will update the coordinates soon!

Global Warming?

I had a pretty interesting conversation with a fellow environmental engineer at my company today, while we were driving to a site for some inspections. I started asking him what his thoughts on renewable energy were, wind energy specifically, and the conversation leaded to global warming. In the brief time we talked, I gathered that he was very anti-global warming, and his opinion was that it is a very exaggerated theory. He was talking about weather trends and how if you simply look back 10 years, you can see how the earth was actually at a cold point, because of sun spot migration, and other naturally occurring phenomenon. I don’t know what to say about global warming because I have not done enough research on the matter. I agreed with a lot of what he said, but I would like to get some more opinions on the topic. What are your opinions on the topic of Global Warming?
After that I brought up the topic of Carbon, and how I felt it was a growing problem, and he concurred. He was telling me about carbon sequestration efforts (planting trees and other plant life to offset carbon usage), and how he felt that these efforts in combating carbon emissions would never be sufficient to have a significant impact on our efforts to dispose of carbon. I agree with him on this point, because I see the sequestration programs as a “feel good” solution to the problem. What I mean is that most people in higher positions know we can not combat carbon emissions easily, because we are so addicted to oil, and also because of vested interests in the oil industry, and they need to do something to make the public feel better about driving SUV’s and burning oil byproducts for energy. Welcome to America….

Tax Incentive

I got this in an email today and it made me smile, so I thought I would share.

President Bush said each of us is getting a $600 tax incentive. It was supposed to be $800 but was lowered due to budget issues. If we spend the money at Wal-Mart, it goes to China. If we spend it on computers it goes to India or China. If we spend it on gas it goes to the Arabs. The only way to keep the $ here is to spend it on beer, gambling, and prostitutes.

I’m Eliot Spitzer and I approve of this message…

The Fire Button At The Gas Station

I saw this on Reddit.com and thought it was pretty funny, seeing as how I design fire suppression systems at my job.

The Doorbell, A Love-Hate Relationship

DING-DONG…Does anyone know why dogs like the doorbell so much? Our pug Junior loves the doorbell, it does not depend if he hears the sound on TV, or the real thing. Is it a frequency association, or just that usually the doorbell rings when someone is coming in? I propose we label this phenonenon as one of the many great wonders of our world.

Jill Bolte Taylor on TED

How many of you watch the TED lectures? Well, if you don’t, you should. Jill Bolte Taylor gave a fascinating lecture on how the brain functions, but the more incredible story is that she hypothesized a lot of her theory while she was having a stroke. I suggest watching this video, it is intriguing and inspiring, even if you don’t understand the onslaught of medical terminology.

The Galapagos Wind Project

Galapagos Wind TurbinesIt’s not everyday that I read something and it sticks with me for a long period of time, so I am surprised that over a month has passed and I can’t get the image (on the left) of the wind turbines located in San Cristóbal out of my head. Wind energy, and renewable energy in general are topics that have always interested me, and possibly influenced me to become an electrical engineer. I wish more people would be more receptive and appreciative of renewable forms of energy, but the truth of the matter is that the cost almost always outweighs the environmental benefits in the eyes of the client (especially in the consulting field). Several weeks ago a project manager approached me regarding a solar installation, and wanted me to design a small system for a client. When I returned submitted the project cost to him several days later, I knew that the odds of the project progressing any further than an email, were slim to none. Well, my instincts were correct, and the project got canned, but I did have fun with the initial design. On a positive note though, renewable energy products such as photovoltaic (solar) panels are dropping in cost and are that trend is forecasted to continue, so I will continue to be optimistic. Let me end with a quote, Charles Darwin described the Galápagos archipelago as

“A little world within itself.… Both in space and time, we seem to be brought somewhat near to that great fact—that mystery of mysteries—the first appearance of new beings on this earth”

Do you want future generations to be able to experience what the earth has to offer, or just new ways to find oil…

A Fresh Start

Well this is my last shot at a blog, if I don’t keep updating, then it is probably not meant for me to do this anymore.  I will give it my best shot, a lot has changed in my life since I last was blogging, so I should have plenty to write about.  Look forward to seeing some updates from me very soon.
